History of SWM Activities

For the first time in India ENVIRON an NGO working on conservation, management and utilization of nature and natural resources in North Eastern Region is conducting a pilot project on door to door collection of non-biodegradable specially plastic waste against Ginger and Garlic which is sponsored by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation. The project was started from 1st December, 2009 and formally inaugurated on 23rd December, 2009.

The project is initially started in ward no. 55 and 59 with two numbers specially designed ‘Cycle van’ developed by ENVIRON.

Initially only the recyclable plastics in the present scenario is collected like carry bags; transparent plastics; pouch packs of vegetable oil, tata salt, milk; plastic bucket & mug; plastic cups; all types of plastic bottle and container etc. at the value of rupees 10/- per kg and glass bottles at the value of rupees 1/- per kg in exchange of Ginger and Garlic.

In this connection ENVIRON have developed a behavioral change of systematic waste handling particularly among the house wife through vigorous awareness and training programme.

VII. Year-2010-2011:

DEVELOPMENT OF A MODEL GRAM PANCHAYAT FOR SOLID AND LIQUID WASTE RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Under the total sanitation campaign programme a pilot project on development of a model gram panchayat for solid and liquid waste management was commenced from 1st February, 2010 at Madhya Sualkuchi gram panhayat under Sualkuchi Block in Kamrup district of Assam.

The pilot project was supported by the CCDU, PHED, Govt. of Assam through the division 1 of Kamrup district. The responsibilities of the nine month duration pilot project was vested upon the ENVIRON, the NGO largely working on solid waste management in North Eastern Region.
