Organization of Rag Pickers

ENVIRON is taking active part in organizing of rag pickers in Guwahati as well as in Itanagar capital complex to collect the plastic waste in a systematic manner.

In Itanagar a pilot project on “Awareness and primary implementation of Municipal Solid waste management in Itanagar capital complex” was implemented by ENVIRON which was sponsored by NABARD, regional office, Itanagar in association with Capital administration, Itanagar. In this connection ENVIRON has organized rag pickers for collection of non-biodegradable solid waste particularly plastic bottle.

Waste pickers as well as rag pickers who are generally neglected by the common people are giving the best service to clean our surroundings. Therefore environ has given special emphasis to organize the waste pickers as well as rag pickers to collect all the non-biodegradable solid waste particularly plastic waste from house to house. In Itanagar as well as in others parts of the country, rag pickers are usually collecting plastic waste from drain and dustbin and they are presently collecting only 10%, whereas 90% of plastic waste goes to the landfills and creating serious land pollution as plastic takes more than 5000 years to mix with the soil.

ENVIRON conducted a day long workshop with waste pickers in a dump house near General Hospital, P-Sector, Naharlagun. During the workshop Dr. A.J. Kashyap, President ENVIRON along with his team members Mr. K.J. Mazumdar, Mr. K. Sarma and Mr. S. Kalita has demonstrated the different uses of non-biodegradable and recyclable solid waste to attract waste pickers and to mobilize their day to day activity in more efficient manner to clean the capital complex.

In the workshop most of the rag pickers as well as waste picker have pathetically explained about the ignorance of govt. about their poverty whereas most of the parents compelled to engage their child in waste picking activities instead of sending them to school.
