PILOT PROJECT ON AWARENESS AND PRIMARY IMPLEMENTATION OF MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN ITANAGAR CAPITAL COMPLEX
Urbanization is improving the living standard of people in Itanagar, the capital city of Arunachal Pradesh led to generate huge quantity of solid waste. Management of solid waste materials is becoming a big concern because it is affecting health as well as environment. Haphazard dumping of garbage along the road side, drain and by the side of garbage bins is becoming common scenario of city life, which creating unhygienic surrounding. This shows the less awareness level and consciousness of the people as they are responsible for creating such situation. On the other hand people are also compelling themselves to breathe and live in such unhygienic and untidy environment. Hence its need some urgent steps to be taken up before the whole city look ugly and full of waste products.
To address the present condition and to generate mass awareness for clean and green Itanagar ENVIRON (an NGO which is largely working on solid waste management in NE region) is conducting a pilot project in Itanagar in association with Capital District Administration which is sponsored by NABARD, Itanagar since 15th March 2010.
Promotion of different handicraft product from Plastic Waste
ENVIRON is promoting different handicraft product from plastic waste which was initially supported by Assam State Social Welfare Board.
Varieties of garland along with chair back, mattresses, table top container, table mat along with different decorative and useful items are now producing by the members of ENVIRON from plastic waste.
In this connection ENVIRON is organization different household level training programme to produce different necessary household utensils from the segregated plastic waste like carry bags and other light plastics which are the major responsible for solid waste pollution.
Objective of these activities is to utilize the house hold generated plastic waste at source so that there will be less chance of mixing of plastic waste with biodegradable solid waste.
As per the study of ENVIRON, once the plastic waste is segregated at source then the biodegradable solid waste in the land field will not create any problem rather it will act as soil conditioner.
