Prof. Amarjyoti Kashyap presented entire activities of the project and specially highlighted on Plastic waste materials as these can lead to environmental degradation and activities of Environ to minimize it into some extent by promoting rag pickers to collect plastic waste and send it to recycling factories at Tezpur, Guwahati, and Siliguri.

He also gave emphasized on Vermicomposting by segregating kitchen waste along with other biodegradable solid waste through door to door collection which can be transformed into 100% organic fertilizer.

Mr. K. Vaiphei the manager of NABARD also appeals the communities not to use chemical fertilizers as it is not good for the human health. He also suggested to setup a compress unit so that the pet bottles collected by rag pickers should be compressed before sending it to recycle factories so that they can send more and more raw materials.

He told that in Sikkim if a person caught violating the rules set up by state government on throwing garbage here and there then he/she should have to give fine of Rs.500/-. People should use litterbins and then dump the waste at dustbin to clean the city he further added. He strongly appeals the state Government to warn shopkeepers not to throw garbage here and there.

It is also highlighted on the seminar that we have to use less plastic materials and think of alternative ways. Mr. Kago Gambo, Assiatant Professor of Politcal science department of DNGC college giving emphasize on using Bamboo as glass as it is available almost in every north eastern states. He also added that Arunachal Pradesh have the huge potentials of natural resources which we can use instead of plastic.

Mr. Tara Yorna Thomas form Arunachal Wildlife Society, Naharlagun, highlighted that the educated people will have to think first initiation to reduce solid waste from their area then only other people get motivated. He also urged the various line departments for the helping hand to Environ to reduce solid waste to make the city clean. He also appeals the concerned authority and Urban Development to complete the JNURRAM project of 25 years. It is also highlighted on the seminar that community participation is very important and awareness needed to peoples through various NGOs, Line departments, and other institutions on solid waste management.

Finally, in the interactive session participating chiefly by the faculty members of DN Govt. College, developed some common approaches for the Integrated Eco-friendly Solid Waste Management in Itanagar and decided to hand over the findings of the seminar to the concerned authority as mentioned below:

Implementation of-

  • Door to Door Collection of Segregated Solid Waste and promotion of Backyard Composting and Vermicomposting.
  • More numbers of litterbin in each nook & corner.
  • Regular cleaning of the Litter Bins.
  • Plastic recycling factory for successful Plastic Waste Management.
  • Recycling factory for Iron, Tin and Glass for Non-biodegradable SWM.
  • Strict ban on Plastic Carry Bag and on Gutkha & Pan-masala and encouragement on promotion of Paper Bags at subsidized rate.
  • Composting, Vermicomposting and production of Bio-gas from Biodegradable Solid Waste.
